Danforth Anchor is a High Holding Power (HHP) fluke anchor designed for recreational boats, yachts, fishing vessels, workboats, and light commercial marine applications. The anchor features two large pivoting triangular flukes, a stock, and a high-strength steel shank, allowing rapid penetration and excellent holding performance in sand, mud, and soft clay. Standard models are available from 3.5 lb (1.6 kg) to 100 lb (45.4 kg) and are manufactured from high-strength steel with a hot-dip galvanized finish for long-term corrosion resistance.

  • Introduction

Danforth Anchor is one of the most widely used fluke-style anchors in the marine industry. Originally developed in 1939 by Richard Danforth, the design relies on holding efficiency rather than anchor weight, making it one of the highest holding-power anchors for recreational and small commercial vessels. The anchor consists of a shank, stock, crown, and two pivoting flukes, which rotate to approximately 32° for efficient penetration into soft seabeds.

The anchor is manufactured from high-strength steel, while Hi-Tensile models utilize heat-treated 4130 alloy steel shanks for increased structural strength. All galvanized models receive a hot-dip galvanized coating to improve corrosion resistance in freshwater and seawater environments. Standard production ranges from 3.5 lb to 100 lb (1.6–45.4 kg), suitable for boats from under 10 ft to approximately 60 ft.

The large fluke area enables the Danforth Anchor to generate high holding force in sand, mud, and clay, often producing holding capacities several times greater than its own weight. The lightweight construction also simplifies handling and storage aboard recreational boats, while the stock ensures correct anchor orientation during setting. The anchor is commonly used with galvanized anchor chain, nylon anchor rope, and anchor swivels for complete anchoring systems.

    Standards

    Name: Danforth Anchor

    MOQ: 1 Piece

Package: Carton / Wooden Crate / Steel Pallet

Manufacturing Standards: Manufactured from high-strength steel in accordance with recognized marine anchor manufacturing practices. Hi-Tensile models utilize heat-treated 4130 alloy steel shanks and are finished with hot-dip galvanizing for corrosion protection. Production includes precision fabrication, welding, machining, and dimensional inspection to ensure consistent anchor geometry and performance.

Testing Standards: Each anchor undergoes material verification, dimensional inspection, weld inspection, heat treatment verification (where applicable), proof load testing, mechanical property testing, coating inspection, visual inspection, and permanent identification marking before shipment. Holding performance is verified through manufacturer testing in representative seabed conditions.

Application Standards: Suitable for recreational boats, yachts, sailboats, fishing vessels, pontoon boats, rescue boats, workboats, and light commercial craft operating on sand, mud, and soft clay seabeds. The Danforth Anchor is commonly used with galvanized anchor chains and nylon anchor rodes for coastal and inland water anchoring.

Maintenance Standards: Inspect the anchor regularly for fluke wear, shank straightness, stock integrity, pivot wear, corrosion, coating damage, and identification markings. Remove accumulated mud or marine growth after use and rinse with fresh water following seawater exposure. Replace anchors showing excessive deformation, cracked welds, or severe corrosion to maintain anchoring performance.
